The Oscars 2019 – cool facts you probably didn’t know

The 91st Academy Awards presentation is set for this weekend, and while each year is different, this one’s unique for a number of reasons. Read on to discover some cool facts about this year’s event, courtesy of WalletHub. They came up with an amazing graphic to help tell the story!

The Oscar economy

It’s no secret that the Academy Awards tend to be a high-dollar affair. Millions upon millions are spent each and every year to keep the awards looking new, unique, and fresh. This year’s Oscars ceremony is estimated to have cost $44 million to put together. And the red carpet alone cost $24,700. If that’s not indicative of a high-class affair, then you’ll have to tell me what is.

The average attendee’s expenses

If you’re like me, this next one will make you question your life choices. The average attendee will spend $1.5 million putting their Oscar ensemble together. A-list actresses end up with the highest bill, which frequently surpasses the $10 million mark; Cate Blanchett’s 2014 outfit is the most expensive in Oscar history.

Simply attending is winning

Simply walking in the door gives you a shot at one of the Oscar goodie bags, as well as luxury trips like 2018’s $40,000 trip to Tanzania. Of course, winning an actual Oscar is much preferable. Leading actors and actresses see an estimated 20 percent pay raise on their next film for reeling in a “Best Actor/Actress” award.

‘Black Panther’ made waves

Black Panther is the first Marvel movie to ever be nominated for Best Picture. It’s also currently the most well-reviewed movie of the bunch on at Rotten Tomatoes, clocking in at a staggering positive review rate of 97 percent. Netflix’s Roma falls in just behind Black Panther at a positive review rate of 96 percent.

The Golden Globe comparison

The Golden Globes occur before the Oscars each year. Bohemian Rhapsody ended up winning top honors at this year’s competing event, leaving us to wonder whether it will also succeed on the Oscar stage. The Academy Awards and Golden Globes have had matching Best Picture winners four times in the past 10 years.

Golden Globe VS Academy Awards round two

While the Golden Globes and the Oscars might not always be simpatico, they’ve both recognized the same individuals as part of their ceremonies – even if it wasn’t Best Picture that they agreed on. See a couple examples in the image below.

Oscars 2019 advertisers don’t get to have as much fun

While watching and attending the 2019 Oscars will be good fun for everybody, advertisers are expected to shell out $2.6 million for a 30-second spot. For reference, that’s almost half of what you’d pay for a slot during the Super Bowl. As an aside, the Oscars had 26.5 million viewers in 2018 – the first time in history it dropped below 30 million.

Women weren’t nominated this year

Surprisingly, no women were cited for top honors as directors this year. Disney and Participant Media clocked in as the most-nominated studios, with Fox Searchlight Pictures coming in just behind. “Roma” is the first Netflix streaming film to be nominated for Best Picture.

The 91st Academy Awards airs on February 24 at 6:00 p.m.
